Assets 3D — Right Drawer Pin Picker

Create a brand-new component from a component type or component template, and pin it directly to a location in the 3D model, right from the Pin Picker tab in the right drawer.

Overview

The Pin Picker tab in the right drawer of 3D Mode lets you create a brand-new component — either from a component type or a component template — and start pinning it to the 3D model in one step, instead of creating the component elsewhere first and pinning it afterward. The Pin Picker has two tabs: Component Types and Component Templates.

Before You Start

The Pin Picker is only available while 3D Mode is active on the Assets page, with a model loaded.

  1. From the navigation, click Asset Management, then click Assets

  2. Click the 3D button in the left sidebar header to enter 3D Mode

  3. Select a model from the Select Model for Pinning dropdown

NOTE: For the full walkthrough of entering 3D Mode, navigating to pinned items, and pinning existing assets/components/tasks, see the "3D Mode (Web) - User Guide" article.

How to Create and Pin a New Component from the Pin Picker

  1. While in 3D Mode with a model loaded, click the Pin Picker tab in the right drawer

  2. Choose the Component Types or Component Templates tab

  3. Search or browse the list, then select an item:

    • Component Types — click a card to create a bare component of that type and begin pinning it

    • Component Templates — click the Pin button on a card to create a component with its template's tasks already attached, and begin pinning it. Click the star icon on a card to favorite it — favorited templates are sorted to the top of the list

  4. A Cancel Pinning button appears in the top-right toolbar — click the location in the 3D view where the new component should be pinned to place it, or click Cancel Pinning to back out without creating anything

NOTE: If no asset is selected on the Assets page, cards in both tabs are disabled and show "Select an asset to enable" — pinning a new component associates it with whichever asset is currently open. The picker can also run in an asset-less mode (used by the separate "Pin Components Without an Asset" flow), where cards stay enabled with no asset selected and the new component is created without an asset association.

Use Case: Building a Component from Scratch, In Place

A maintenance manager walks through the model and notices a bearing that was never entered into Redlist. Instead of leaving 3D Mode to create it, they open the Pin Picker, select the Component Templates tab, click Pin on the "Bearing — Grease" template (already favorited from past use), and place the pin directly on the equipment — creating the component, its tasks, and its 3D location in one pass.

Best Practices

  1. Favorite Your Most-Used Component Templates: Starring a template in the Pin Picker's Component Templates tab keeps it at the top of the list, so recurring equipment types are faster to find and pin.

  2. Select an Asset Before Using the Pin Picker: New components created from the Pin Picker are associated with whichever asset is currently open — select the right asset first so the component doesn't need to be reassigned later.

Troubleshooting

Issue: Component Type or Component Template cards are greyed out in the Pin Picker
Solution:

  1. No asset is currently selected, and the picker is not in asset-less mode

  2. Select an asset on the Assets page first, then reopen the Pin Picker

Summary

The Pin Picker tab in the right drawer of 3D Mode lets you create a new component from a component type or component template and pin it directly to the model, in one step. Favorite frequently-used templates to keep them at the top of the list, and select an asset first so new components are associated correctly.
