Overview
Digital Twin normally requires pinning a component to an existing asset in the hierarchy. On tablet, a pin mode lets technicians place components directly on the 3D model without tying them to any asset — useful for shared infrastructure like piping runs or standalone fixtures that don't map cleanly to an existing asset record. Turning the mode on replaces the asset hierarchy sidebar with a searchable list of Component Templates, so a technician can pin and create a component in a couple of taps without leaving the model view.
This feature is available on tablet only, and requires a Digital Twin model to already be loaded — you can't use it until a model is selected.
Accessing Pin Components Without an Asset
Open the app on your tablet, navigate to a work order, and open the Digital Twin view with a model already loaded.
Tap the ⋮ menu.
Tap Pin Components to turn the mode on. The menu item changes to Stop Pinning while the mode is active.
NOTE: The in-app menu labels are just Pin Components and Stop Pinning — they don't literally say “without an asset.” This is the only pinning mode that lets you place a component without linking it to an asset.
How to Pin a Component From a Template
Steps:
With the mode on, the sidebar shows a Component Templates list instead of the asset hierarchy. Each row reads as “[template name] - [description]”.
Use the search bar at the top to find a template by name, or scroll the list — templates already favorited elsewhere in Redlist automatically sort to the top here; there's no way to favorite a template from this screen.
Tap the pin button next to the template you want to use — it's the same pin icon used in the normal asset hierarchy.
Tap a location on the 3D model to place the pin.
Saving the pin immediately creates a new Component (and its Task) from that template and links it to the pin — there's no review or confirmation screen first.
NOTE: The Component Templates list is capped at 100 results. If your tenant has more, a “Showing first 100 items” message appears at the bottom of the list — search to narrow it down further.
The pin button — along with every other pin-starting control on this screen — is disabled while any pin is already being placed, not just the template you tapped. Finish or cancel the current pin before starting another.
If you search for a template and get no matches, the list simply appears empty — there's currently no “no results” message.
How to Pin a Custom Component
Steps:
With the mode on, tap + Add Component at the bottom of the list.
Tap a location on the 3D model to place the pin.
The Create Component screen opens — fill in the component details and tap Save.
The new component is linked to the pin you placed.
NOTE: If you cancel the Create Component screen instead of saving, the pin you placed is removed. Unlike pinning from a template, this flow always shows the Create Component screen before the component is actually created.
How to Un-pin a Component
Steps:
Tap the remove/un-pin control on the pin, the same as you would for any other pin in Digital Twin.
Since this component isn't linked to an asset, a confirmation appears: “This component is not associated with an asset. This will remove the pin and delete the component. Are you sure you want to continue?”
Confirm to remove the pin and delete the component, or cancel to keep it.
NOTE: This is different from un-pinning a normal asset-linked component, which only asks “Are you sure you want to unpin this item?” — un-pinning an assetless component always deletes the component too, since it has no other place to live.
Understanding Pin Components Without an Asset
This mode is available in the tablet Digital Twin view only, and only once a model is loaded.
Turning the mode on replaces the sidebar entirely — the asset hierarchy is not accessible until you turn the mode back off.
Favoriting a template isn't done from this screen — templates favorited elsewhere in Redlist simply sort to the top of this list automatically.
The Component Templates list is capped at 100 results at a time; search to narrow down a long list.
Un-pinning a component that was created this way also deletes the component itself, since it has no other place to live outside the pin.
Pull down on the Component Templates list to refresh it — like other lists in the app, this triggers a full account sync rather than a quick list-only refresh.
Use Cases
Shared infrastructure — A technician documents a standalone valve or shared piping run that isn't tied to a specific asset by pinning it directly from a Component Template.
Quick one-off components — A technician needs to track a piece of equipment mid-inspection that isn't in the template list; they use Add Component to pin it and fill in the details on the spot.
Frequent templates — A technician who regularly logs the same few component types keeps those templates favorited (elsewhere in Redlist) so they're always at the top of the list here.
Best Practices
Confirm a model is loaded before starting: The Pin Components mode isn't available until a Digital Twin model has been selected.
Turn the mode off when done: Since it replaces the asset hierarchy, switch back to normal pinning mode once you've finished placing assetless components.
Double-check placement before saving from a template: Since saving a template pin creates the component immediately with no review step, confirm the pin location before you tap it — un-pinning afterward deletes the component too.
Use Add Component for anything without a matching template: Don't force an item into the wrong template just to save a step.
Troubleshooting
Issue: I don't see Pin Components in the menu.
Solution:
Confirm you're on a tablet device — this feature is tablet only.
Confirm you're in the Digital Twin view within a work order, with a model already loaded.
Issue: The pin button next to a template is grayed out.
Solution:
Another pin is currently being placed somewhere on the screen — from a template or Add Component. Finish placing it (or cancel) before starting a new one.
Issue: I canceled the Create Component screen and the pin disappeared.
Solution:
This is expected — canceling without saving removes the pin along with it. Start over from the template or Add Component button to try again.
Issue: I searched for a template and the list just looks empty.
Solution:
This is expected if there are no matching templates — there's currently no explicit “no results” message. Try clearing or adjusting your search.
Issue: I don't see a way to favorite a template from my tablet.
Solution:
Favoriting isn't available from this screen. Favorite the template elsewhere in Redlist, and it will automatically sort to the top of this list on tablet.
Summary
On a loaded Digital Twin model, tablet users can place standalone components on the 3D view without needing an existing asset. Turn on Pin Components from the ⋮ menu, then pin a Component Template — which creates a linked component immediately, with no review step — or use Add Component to build a custom one with a review screen first. Templates favorited elsewhere in Redlist automatically sort to the top here; there's no way to favorite from this screen. Un-pinning an assetless component always deletes it too, and only one pin can be in progress anywhere on the screen at a time.
