Component Type Shorthand Code (Mobile) - User Guide

09.18 batch — M5

Written by Trevor Shaffer

Overview

Component types can carry a short abbreviation, or shorthand code, alongside their full name. On mobile, this shorthand shows wherever the component type appears, letting technicians identify a component quickly without reading its full description. The shorthand is set on web or mobile and stays in sync between both.

Accessing Component Types

  1. Tap the Assets tab in the bottom navigation bar.

  2. Tap an asset, then tap Components.

  3. Tap a component to view its details.

Where Shorthand Appears

  • Component detail screen: The component type's shorthand shows next to its name, when one is set.

  • Component cards: Shorthand appears on the gallery card alongside the component type.

  • Template and type pickers: When selecting a component type or template, matching shorthand codes show next to the full name.

How Syncing Works

Steps:

  1. Set or update a shorthand on a component type from either web or mobile.

  2. The change syncs automatically to the other platform the next time it connects.

  3. Either platform can be treated as the source of truth — there's no primary side.

NOTE: A device must sync before a shorthand set elsewhere shows up locally.

Use Cases

  • A technician scanning through a component list uses the shorthand shown on each card to confirm the right component type at a glance, without opening full descriptions.

  • A team that manages component types primarily from web still sees shorthand reflected correctly on every technician's device, since the value syncs both ways.

Best Practices

  1. Don't wait for it to duplicate on mobile — it inherits from web: Shorthand set on a component type from web appears on mobile automatically once synced; there's no separate mobile-only field to fill in.

  2. Sync before troubleshooting a missing shorthand: A stale sync is the most common reason a shorthand doesn't show up yet.

Troubleshooting

Issue: A shorthand set on web isn't showing on a component in the mobile app.

Solution:

  1. Confirm the device has synced since the shorthand was set.

  2. Pull to refresh or reopen the component screen to pull the latest synced value.

Summary

Shorthand codes on component types carry over to mobile automatically, showing on component details, gallery cards, and type pickers so technicians can identify components quickly without leaving the field.
