Overview
An asset or a component can be saved directly as a reusable template — an Asset Template from an asset's profile, or a Component Template from a component within an asset. This captures an asset's or component's existing components and tasks into a template that can be applied when setting up other equipment.
Accessing Save as Template
From the navigation, click Resources, then click Equipment
Click Assets, then open the asset
How to Save an Asset as a Template
Steps:
On the asset's profile, click the ⋮ (more options) icon in the header
Select Save Asset as Template
In the Create Asset Template pane, enter a Template Name
Optionally check Save component images to the template
Optionally check Include selected asset as an associated asset
Review the summary card, which shows the source asset and how many components and tasks will be included
Click Save
NOTE: Save Asset as Template appears only for users with create permission on Programs.
How to Save a Component as a Template
Steps:
On the asset's profile, click the Components tab
In the component's row, click the ⋮ (more options) icon
Select Save as Template
If the component has no tasks, a warning appears and the save can't proceed
If the component has tasks, confirm the task count shown in the dialog, then click Save
If a template already exists for that component type, choose Overwrite to replace it, or Select Type to save under a different component type instead
Understanding Save as Template
Asset templates capture more: Saving an asset as a template can include its components, their tasks, and optionally component images and the source asset itself as an associated asset.
Component templates capture the component type and tasks: Saving a component as a template applies to that component type; the component needs at least one task before it can be saved.
Permission differs by level: Saving an asset as a template requires create permission on Programs. Saving a component as a template has no separate permission requirement.
Component templates can be overwritten: Only one template exists per component type at a time — saving a new one for a type that already has a template requires an explicit choice to overwrite or pick a different type.
Use Cases / Examples
Use Case 1: Standardizing a fleet from one asset
A reliability engineer configures one pump asset with the exact set of components and tasks correct for a whole fleet, then saves it as an Asset Template so future pumps start from the same baseline.
Use Case 2: Capturing a component update for reuse
A planner adds a new task to a "Motor" component on one asset and saves it as a Component Template so every other asset with a "Motor" component can pick up the same task set.
Use Case 3: Adding a task before saving a template
A planner tries to save a component with no tasks yet, sees the warning, adds a task to the component, then saves it as a template.
Best Practices
Name Asset Templates Clearly: Since the template name is the only identifier shown later, use a name that reflects the equipment type it applies to.
Review the Summary Before Saving: The Create Asset Template pane shows exactly how many components and tasks will be captured — confirm this matches expectations before saving.
Decide on Overwrite Carefully: Overwriting a component template replaces it entirely — use Select Type instead when the intent is a second, distinct template for a related component type.
Troubleshooting
Issue: Save Asset as Template doesn't appear in the asset's ⋮ menu.
Solution:
This option appears only for users with create permission on Programs — confirm with an administrator.
Issue: Save as Template on a component shows a warning and won't save.
Solution:
A component needs at least one task before it can be saved as a template.
Add a task to the component, then try again.
Issue: Saving a component as a template shows "Component Template Already Exists."
Solution:
Choose Overwrite to replace the existing template for that component type.
Or choose Select Type to save under a different component type instead.
